Employment data for September show Oregon has lost almost 130,000 private sector jobs since the recession started in November 2007.  Meanwhile, government sector employment has continued to rise.  State employment has increased by more than 2%, while private sector employment has dropped by 9% in the worst economy since the Great Depression.

SPIEGEL: Why do Europeans react so positively to him?

Krauthammer: Because Europe, for very understandable reasons, has been chaffing for 60 years under the protection, but also the subtle or not so subtle domination of America. Europeans like to see the big guy cut down to size, it’s a natural reaction. You know, Europe ran the world for 400 or 500 years until the civilizational suicide of the two World Wars. And then America emerged as the world hegemon, with no competition and unchallenged. The irony is America is the only hegemonic power that never sought hegemony, unlike, for example, Napoleonic France. Americans are not intrinsically imperial, but we ended up dominant by default: Europe disappeared after the Second World War, the Soviet Union disappeared in 1991, so here we are. Of course Europeans like to see the hegemon diminished, and Obama is the perfect man to do that.

SPIEGEL: What major mistakes has Obama made?

Krauthammer: I don’t know whether I should call it a mistake, but it turns out he is a left-liberal, not center-right the way Bill Clinton was. The analogy I give is that in America we play the game between the 40-yard lines, in Europe you go all the way from goal line to goal line. You have communist parties, you have fascist parties, we don’t have that, we have very centrist parties.

So Obama wants to push us to the 30-yard line, which for America is pretty far. Right after he was elected, he gave an address to Congress and promised to basically remake the basic pillars of American society — education , energy and health care. All this would move America toward a social democratic European-style state. It is outside of the norm of America.

SPIEGEL: So he didn’t see the massive resistance coming?

Krauthammer: Obama misread his mandate. He was elected six weeks after a financial collapse unlike any seen in 60 years; after eight years of a presidency which had tired the country; in the middle of two wars that made the country opposed to the Republican government that involved us in the wars; and against a completely inept opponent, John McCain. Nevertheless, Obama still only won by 7 points. But he thought it was a great sweeping mandate and he could implement his social democratic agenda.

SPIEGEL: Are you saying that diplomacy always fails?

Krauthammer: No, foolishness does. Perhaps when he gets nowhere on Iran, nowhere with North Korea, when he gets nothing from the Russians in return for what he did to the Poles and the Czechs, gets nowhere in the Middle East peace talks — maybe at that point he’ll begin to rethink whether the world really runs by international norms, consensus, and sweetness and light, or whether it rests on the foundation of American and Western power that, in the final analysis, guarantees peace.

This week is make or break week with the government takeover of health care in the House of Representatives.  It is our understanding that Speaker Pelosi is working to bring the bill to the floor of the House on Friday or Saturday of this week.  She would not be setting that as a deadline if she were not fairly confident that she can line up the votes.

Additionally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is working to line up 60 votes so that the bill may be brought to the Senate Floor.  The Senate cannot bring a bill to the floor as easily as the House.  In the Senate, the bill must have unanimous consent to be brought to a vote (which this one will not) or there will have to be a motion to proceed. When the motion to proceed is announced, objections will occur.  After this Senator Reid will file a cloture motion, which will attempt to stop debate and actually allow vote on his original motion to proceed.  For the cloture motion to win, there must be 60 votes.

It is not hard to see why a standing ovation awaits the president at Turtle Bay. Obama’s popularity at the UN boils down essentially to his willingness to downplay American global power. He is the first American president who has made an art form out of apologizing for the United States, which he has done on numerous occasions on foreign soil, from Strasbourg to Cairo. The Obama mantra appears to be – ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do to atone for your country. This is a message that goes down very well in a world that is still seething with anti-Americanism.

Simply put, Barack Obama is loved at the UN because he largely fails to advance real American leadership. This is a dangerous strategy of decline that will weaken US power and make her far more vulnerable to attack.

As we saw last week with his shameful surrender to Moscow over missile defence, the president is perfectly happy to undermine America’s allies and gut its strategic defences while currying favour with enemies and strategic competitors. The missile defence debacle is rightly viewed as a betrayal by the Poles and the Czechs, and Washington has clearly give the impression that it cares little about those who have bravely stood shoulder to shoulder with their US allies in Iraq, Afghanistan and the wider war on terror.

The Obama administration is now overseeing and implementing the biggest decline in American global power since Jimmy Carter. Unfortunately it may well take another generation for the United States to recover.

A protectionist move that is bad politics, bad economics, bad diplomacy and hurts America. Did we miss anything?

You can be fairly sure that when a government slips an announcement out at nine o’clock on a Friday night, it is not proud of what it is doing. That is one of the only things that makes sense about Barack Obama’s decision to break a commitment he, along with other G20 leaders, reaffirmed last April: to avoid protectionist measures at a time of great economic peril. In every other way the president’s decision to slap a 35% tariff on imported Chinese tyres looks like a colossal blunder, confirming his critics’ worst fears about the president’s inability to stand up to his party’s special interests and stick to the centre ground he promised to occupy in office.

Dumb and dumber

Nor is the potential fallout from Mr Obama’s wrongheaded decision limited to trade. Evidence of a weak president being pushed leftward might cause investors to worry whether he will prove similarly feeble when it comes to reining in the vast deficits he is now racking up; and that might spook the buyers of bonds that finance all those deficits. Looming large among these, of course, are the Chinese. Deteriorating trade relations between the world’s number one debtor and its number one creditor are enough to keep any banker awake at night.

And America needs China for a lot more than T-bonds. Any hope of securing a climate-change agreement at Copenhagen in December on a successor treaty to Kyoto will require close co-operation between America and China. So does the work of negotiating with North Korea on its nuclear weapons. And as for Iran, where America is keen to seek a fresh round of UN sanctions in the hope of forcing it to scrap its nuclear programme, China holds a power of veto at the Security Council. Under the relevant trade laws, Mr Obama had the absolute discretion not to impose the recommended tyre tariffs on the grounds of overall economic interest or national security. Given everything that is at stake, his decision not to exercise it amounts to an act of vandalism.

n June of this year, David Letterman made extraordinarily offensive comments about Sarah Palin and her 14 year old daughter. FireDavidLetterman called on advertisers to drop the Letterman Show, and CBS to fire Letterman. A few advertisers did this, but many simply ignored these calls.

In August of this year, Glenn Beck expressed his personal opinions about President Obama. These comments were of a different nature than Letterman’s nasty personal comments about Sarah Palin and her family. A left wing advocacy group, the Color of Change (you know, the group that admitted Communist and Barack Obama advisor Van Jones founded) called for advertisers to drop Glenn Beck. Apparently, some advertisers responded to this call.

Our purpose is to confront these advertisers with their own hypocrisy and lack of consistency, directly, and in their pocket books.

America’s economy is thrashing about like a mastodon in a tar pit, and the nation’s leaders are resorting to reading goat entrails in efforts to solve the fiscal crisis. Thus, it’s only natural that the most popular attempt to pump up the economy is a silly, self-defeating program.

So it goes in Bizarro World.

Cash for Clunkers, I admit, sounds good on the surface — it’s designed not only to get gas-guzzlers and polluters off the road but also to boost gimpy auto sales. But you know, of course, that nothing good ever happens when the brain trusts of Detroit and Congress tackle a “solution.”

The worst part of C-for-C is that it ultimately reduces America’s wealth. Forget about the $3 billion going out to buy the clunkers — think of the “clunkers” themselves. From what I’ve seen and heard, a good percentage of the 700,000 or so targeted cars are still serviceable vehicles. Surely a provision should have been crafted to salvage the best ones for public use instead of the junkyard.

That’s only a minor annoyance, though — think of the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of the working poor who would love to own my daughter’s car, let alone one of the better “clunkers” turned in to the government. Perhaps a better idea — if the auto and federal bureaucrats had even bothered to think about C-for-C’s repercussions — would have been to allot useable cars to local anti-poverty or job-training agencies across the country. Provisions could have been made to assign the cars to the poor so they would have access to jobs. In fact, if a participant earned enough to buy his own vehicle, the “clunker” would be returned to the agency for another poor person’s use.

Cash for Clunkers May Cost Up to $45,354 Per Vehicle

Some refreshingly honest reporting has come from Edmunds.com, a car buying site that is telling the truth, in spite of benefiting from an increase in business and site traffic, due to the program. According to Edmunds, about 200,000 old low mileage cars would normally be traded in, every 3 months, in exchange for more efficient higher mileage cars, without this program.

The highest rebate is $4,500, and the lowest is $3,500. If everyone qualified for $4,500 per vehicle, about 222,000 vehicles would have just taken advantage of the government’s money. At $3,500, 286,000 vehicles will have been sold.

I assume that, given all the raving, the government will eventually get around to assigning more money. It will take at least 2 or 3 months for the legislation to work its way through Congress. Meanwhile, if all buyers have qualified for the higher $4,500 rebate, the “cash for clunkers” program will mean a marginal increase in car sales of 22,000 this quarter. $1 billion divided by 22,000 means a net cost to the government of $45,354 per car.

If all buyers only qualify for the $3,500 rebate, it means a marginal increase in sales of about 86,000, or a net cost to the taxpayers of $11,628 per vehicle. In all likelihood, however, there will probably be a mix of vehicles qualifying for various rebates between $3,500 and $4,500. Based upon that assumption, Edmunds.com estimates that the average cost to the taxpayer will be about $20,000 per vehicle.

What’s Next?

An inflation-, debt-induced mini-recovery, I think, will help Obama by early next year. But the laws of physics will then catch up to him, as a falling dollar, high interest, high inflation, low growth, and high unemployment return to choke off a return to former prosperity. His political fortunes will hinge on what part of this economic cycles the elections fall, and the degree to which he jettisons the Chicago style (I predict many of us critics will be fully audited by next April or see Team Obama increase the swarm on websites and postings). With savvy Democratic role models like Truman, JFK, and Clinton, it is suicidal that he pursues a Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, or Kerry agenda—as if he really thinks voters supported him to resurrect such unpopular policies.
